Checkout These Best Dressed Celebrities At The Met Gala 2021

by Kirrily Santos

The 13th of September was not just any day. We were all graced by the long-awaited return of the Met Gala. Thanks to the pandemic, an event that usually occurs in the month of May, was pushed to the end of the year. But are we complaining? Of course not! As we were flattered by our very own celebrities sporting kickass, chic and bold looks as they strutted down the red carpet.

For those of you who don’t know what the Met Gala is about, allow me to help you out!

Often referred to as ‘fashion’s biggest night’ or ‘ fashion prom’, the Met Gala is a fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY. The event welcomes stars, young creatives, industry paragons and other famous personas alike. Every year, the Met has a theme, and this year, it was – ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’ or ‘American Independence’. It celebrates the Institute’s 75th anniversary, and explores a contemporary vocabulary or ingenuity of the American way of dressing. When it came to the outfits, we were graced by looks that reflected America’s gusty, adventurous sartorial spirit. We saw guests in both subtle and obvious nods to American fashion, history and culture, given that the theme allowed them to leave behind a homegrown label and adopt a range of interpretations, thus making this year’s theme the most exciting.

From famous designers like Donatella Versace to Anna Wintour, celebrities like Jennifer Lopez to Kate Hudson and reality television stars like Kim Kardashian, and model supermodels like Kendall and Gigi, you name it, they were present.

So, while everyone killed it at the red carpet in their own way, there were some guests who stood out and whose looks kicked the glamour we associate with the Met Gala while giving us the classic American style, both nostalgic and forward-thinking.

Below are some looks from the Met Gala 2021 red carpet, which we were personally in love with!

When Riri steps in, everyone needs to stop and watch, and that’s just what happened.

It was truly a big night for Balenciaga, the house responsible for dressing some of the biggest stars in the world, multiple events. While Rihanna is known for her bold choice of clothing, this year, she chose to opt for a black voluminous gown/overcoat and a beanie from Balenciaga’s latest couture collection. She topped it off with Bulgari jewellery and completed her look with Thelma Wests’ rings. When it came to makeup, she chose to keep it bold by opting for a dark lip shade and complementing eyeshadow hue.

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer was most certainly ‘waiting for tonight’ to show off her glam. While she’s been in the news for a while ( ahem – now boyfriend Ben Affleck), Lopez came to the Met Gala with one thought in mind – to SLAY! And she did! She understood the assignment brilliantly and chose to go with a western-inspired, chocolate hued Ralph Lauren gown. Complementing this outfit and her iconic star power were a faux-fur bolero, a brown leather belt, silver statement necklace and earrings, a leather choker, and a hat that might’ve been picked up from Billy Ray Cyrus. Plus, it’s J.Lo, so metallic platforms it was.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Every Met Gala, there are a few guests who love making a political statement. And this year, there were a few as well – one of them was Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Love it or hate it, she made a major statement with her “Tax the Rich” gown. Dressed in a classy white off-the-shoulder dress in a mermaid silhouette by Brooklyn-based designer brand Brother Vellies; the New York politician revealed the statement, scrawled in bold red lettering on the back of her dress, as she ascended the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Making her Met Gala debut, she completed the look with trademark golden hoops and a single pink flower pinned into her slick hair bun.

Justin and Hailey Bieber

What do you mean? A major event like this and the Bieber’s won’t be present! Taking the trophy for the best-looking couple in town; these lovelies went absolutely American and classy. Justin Bieber, who surprised the crowd with a performance later that night, arrived in a tux from “la maison Drew,” an apparent spin-off of his streetwear brand House of Drew. His wife, Hailey Bieber, went for an edgy ( deep neckline) black fitted gown from the house of Saint Laurent.

Kendall Jenner

Supermodel and reality television star Kendall Jenner is no stranger to the Met Gala. Unlike her sister Kim, she decided to opt for a custom made Givenchy gown that was embellished with crystals and featured a fishtail train and a jeweled neckpiece – was inspired by the house’s most famous muse, Audrey Hepburn, and a dress she wore in My Fair Lady.

The singer showed up to the 2021 Met Gala in a Bode outfit featuring repurposed antiques and white leather flats! She chose to not honor America’s tradition of wearing high heels and fancy shoes to the function before changing into a sensible pair for the after-party. She topped it off with a beaded headpiece and a colorful beaded jacket and skirt.

Very unlike her usual self, the pop star stepped out of her comfort zone for the 2021 Met Gala. She chose to channel golden-age Hollywood bombshells like Marilyn Monroe and  Jayne Mansfield in a stunning and classy peach Oscar de la Renta gown with a Rihanna-rivaling train. She also could literally pass for a Disney princess, so she gets extra credit.

Lil’ Nas X went all out at the Met Gala. He embarked on a total of 3 costume changes, each one creating a statement in itself and custom designed by Donatella Versace. He starts off with a regal golden velvet fur coat, to reveal a golden suit of armor and later removes the armor to reveal a sleek gold bedazzled bodysuit!

Timothée Chalamet

Taking some time off from promoting his upcoming movie – Dune, Timothée Chalamet didn’t fail to slay. Yes, although he might’ve broken the rules with regards to the theme, he still made a statement with his arrival. He chose to go simple in an all-white ensemble by Haider Ackermann, who is one of his most-worn designers. His ensemble consisted of a satin tuxedo jacket with black lapels, paired with white sweats and Converse shoes. If that isn’t American enough, we don’t know what is!

A force in fashion and uber famous! The chief content officer and global editorial director of Vogue – Anna Wintour arrived at the 2021 Met Gala in a gown that is WOW! From the house of Oscar de la Renta, her floral gown featured an elegant mermaid silhouette, long sleeves and ruffled train. She played perfectly into the evening’s theme and chose to wear her dear friends label. Are we impressed, yes!

Does she ever fail to make a statement? We think not! Kim Kardashian chose to go completely opposite than her sister and mom at this year’s Met Gala by opting for a stark black gown by Balenciaga. Looming like a void on the red carpet, she shocked everyone with her choice of ensemble. We do give her points for being badass and bold!

Kristen Stewart

She is no more a vampire chick! Kristen Stewart has been channeling quiet bold looks at every Met Gala, and this year too, she chose to go classy in Chanel. She sported a ruffled pink top, white trousers and finished off with a styled pompadour.

Megan Fox

Apart from major PDA between her and Machine Gun Kelly, Megan brought fire to the 2021 Met Gala by looking foxy in a crimson laced red gown with a high slit from the house of DUNDAS. Fierce and bold, do we like it, yes!
